2008 TAKE BACK LABOR DAY WEEKEND
2008TAKEBACKLABORDAY
This Labor Day weekend (Aug 29
th-Sept. 1
st) will have events celebrating the struggles and victories of working people in America. Its our hard work and the ability to negotiate the pay and benefits at our workplaces that made this country great. 2008 will be a turning point year in rebuilding the labor movement with the Employee Free Choice Act.
Today we have a system where CEOs demand contracts for themselves but fight to keep workers from having a voice on the job. Companies fire tens of thousands of workers every year just for trying to form a union. This bill would stop corporations from intimidating workers who want to form unions and ensure they can negotiate fair wages that support a family, healthcare and a secure retirement.
The 2008 elections will be a turning point in rebuilding the labor movement, and we must hold our newly elected government leaders accountable to working Americans in 2009. Passing the Employee Free Choice Act is one of the major ways that the new President and Congress can affirm their commitment to working people. We will be signing people up all weekend and at the Labor Day Parade
On Friday August 29th SEIU members from around the country will be visiting St. Louis to get the word out about the Employee Free Choice act and its impact when passed by congress. SEIU International Treasurer Anna Burger will Kick off the Labor Day week end at the SEIU Local 2000 union hall @ 5585 Pershing Ave. in St. Louis at 10am. Free food and refreshments will be available and Attendance prizes will include Two $50 gas cards.
